The Frame File - Alexander, J. (£12)
Subtitled "The Punch and Judy Playhouse" This is a revised and greatly expanded edition published in 2004, known as "The Expanded Frame File". 84 pages. A4. Comb bound. Review: Absolutely essential reading for all Punch and Judy performers. This describes the various forms of fit-ups and booths which can be built for indoor or outdoor use, describing their various features, advantages and disadvantages, and gives clear constructional details for many.
There are invaluable tips and bits of advice scattered throughout this book: the best knot for securing your booth, how to avoid playboard droop, how to support loud-speakers, the best way to fix a proscenium, how to make bolts and wing nuts obsolete, Bob Sacco's brilliant stratagem to avoid guy ropes and much, much more and all the obvious product of genuine practical experience.
There are also full working drawings exclusively available here including the original George Blake lazy-tong design, the famed Joe Beeby frame, three brilliant Basil Smith creations, a Fred Tickner detailed design and the exceedingly practical Fast Frame. Other fit-ups are discussed and there at least fifteen different approaches illustrated.
Even though this treatise is written for the Punch and Judy performer any puppeteer will find this a treasure trove of ideas, neatly set out and clearly illustrated. John Alexander has done us a great service. (Review by Chris Someville - PunchandJudy.com)
